Maintenance of a real-time blogosphere is dependent upon communication between blog and feed authors and the web services that provide near-real-time search of posted messages.
To date, blog authors have had to rely upon automated mechanisms in blog software that generally do not provide any notification of whether their pings were successfully delivered to the web services or have had to rely on multi-site ping web services that are slow because of the enormous amount of traffic that is generated by authors.
Enter Pong... Pong is a desktop application that allows users to ping up to 14 web services at once with notifications about updated blogs/feeds.
Pong is designed to accomplish this very rapidly and has built-in mechanisms to avoid unnecessary pings from entering the system. It evaluates the format of the URL that the user enters and checks the http response code at the location of the blog and feed URLs prior to forwarding any pings.
Based upon feedback from representatives of nearly all of the web services that are included in the application, a lock mechanism is incorporated in the application in order to prevent abuse of the ping system while still maintaining a responsive, functional application. Give it a shot if you publish, you'll like it!
