Описание программы fireQuest

fireQuest is an extension for Mozilla Firefox which works as a naisQuest client and offers "search experience" similar to plain web search interface. What makes the difference is that fireQuest allows user to open and edit found document from its original location. That way modified document will be available to other team members as soon as it's saved. In addition, naisQuest server will pick up the changes when the next update process runs so the index will be in sync with documents.
With search engines that have web (HTML) search pages only, when you click on a result that links to an MS Word document, the browser will offer you to open the file or save it on a local drive. In either case you'll end up with a copy of the found document! In order to make changes available to your co-workers you have to copy document back to its repository (shared folder or web site).
If you tried to establish an environment like the one described above, you know it doesn't work well in practice – people forget to save a document back to the shared location and soon you have a problem locating the up-to-date version of the document. You would probably stop using the web search engine completely or be tempted to switch to some inappropriate or/and expensive solution.
fireQuest is an extension for Mozilla Firefox browser that works in couple with naisQuest search engine(s), bridging the gap between web search engine and desktop software. It allows user to open found document from its original location using system default application*.
Please note that fireQuest relies on file access permissions defined on system - it will not change any security restriction you have in place.
